Garage Door Painters in Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks Painters paint garage doors across the Sevenoaks district — timber, metal, GRP composite, and uPVC.
- Timber garage doors stripped, primed, and repainted to last
- Metal and steel doors: rust treatment, priming, and durable finish
- GRP composite doors: specialist adhesion primer before topcoat
- uPVC garage doors: plastic primer system, matched or updated colour
- Colour matching available to coordinate with the house exterior
The Sevenoaks district has a distinct mix of garage door types. Victorian and Edwardian detacheds on Granville Road, Kippington Road, and Eardley Road often have original or replacement timber side-hinged doors that are part of the wider period exterior. Period village properties in Otford, Westerham, and Hildenborough frequently have outbuildings and garage structures with timber doors exposed to the damp conditions of the North Downs and Weald.

Garage Door Painting Services
Timber Garage Doors
Timber garage doors require full preparation before new paint is applied. We strip back to sound material, sand the surface, and fill any cracks or splits with exterior-grade filler. Bare timber is primed with an oil-based or specialist timber primer before two coats of durable exterior gloss or satin.
On properties in Sevenoaks town and the commuter villages, timber doors have often been repainted multiple times. Where paint build-up is affecting the finish or causing the door to bind, we strip back fully before repainting. Side-hinged and up-and-over timber doors are both treated the same way.
Metal and Steel Doors
Metal garage doors fail when rust is left untreated beneath the finish coat. Bubbling and rust bleed-through are both signs of skipped preparation. We wire-brush surface rust, apply a rust converter, and prime with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any finish coat.
Where corrosion is more advanced, we assess whether painting remains viable or whether the door needs replacing. The preparation is where the durability is built — the finish coat is straightforward once the surface is correctly prepared.

GRP, uPVC, and Combined Exterior Work

GRP and Composite Doors
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) composite doors are the most common non-timber door type on newer properties across the district. The material is smooth and non-porous — standard primers do not bond to it. A specialist adhesion primer is essential before any topcoat, otherwise the finish will peel regardless of the paint brand used over it.
The substrate does not need stripping, only cleaning, degreasing, and correct priming. A wide colour range is available once the adhesion primer is applied.
uPVC Doors
uPVC garage doors can be painted well with the right preparation system. A specialist plastic primer creates the bond between the uPVC surface and the finish coat. Standard paint applied without this primer will not stick and will peel within months.
With the correct primer in place, a painted uPVC door holds its finish for five to eight years before a maintenance repaint is needed. Colour choices range from standard white to contemporary greys and black.
Combining with an Exterior Repaint
Garage doors are often painted as part of a wider exterior repaint programme. Completing them at the same time as the house exterior means one visit and a consistent finish across the whole elevation. See our exterior painting page for the full scope of exterior work.
For the front door painted alongside, see our front door painting page.
How We Paint Garage Doors
1. Assessment
We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.
5. Final Check
We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.
